OUR ORIGIN

On February 5th, 2001, at 11 pm, Ms. Malini, the founding secretary of SPANDHANA, was informed regarding a suspicious death of a Muslim woman named HaseenaBanu in a village called Honganoor, which is 6 Kms away from ChannapattanaTaluk.

Ms.Malini along with her colleague reached the spot and found it to be a brutal murder demanding dowry. The victim’s parents being threatened and bribed by the in-laws, refused to lodge a complaint. Understanding the gravity of the incident, Ms. Malini and her colleague lodged the complaint in public interest. The incident was legally inquired and the accused were punished. However, during this time Ms. Malini and her colleague were working with a different organization which objected their activist approach on an issue which was out of the organization’s objectives. Hence, they resigned and started an organization to fight for ‘Gender Justice’; in this way SPANDHANA came into existence.

SPANDHANA is legally established under Karnataka Society Registration Act on October 3rd, 2001.
