Cultural Approach

Cultural approach is a swift weapon SPANDHANA uses to penetrate our message to the public on several social issues. In fact, at many times our entry to a new working area is carried out through a street play or cultural campaigns throughout different streets in the village by singing several awareness songs and revolutionary slogans.

        SPANDHANA has a full-fledged cultural team named ‘Manavi’ which includes several youths from Yuvaspandhana along with SPANDHANA staff. To maintain a sustainable cultural troop, we also train the interested youth of Yuvaspandhana and children of Makkala Chavadi. Some of the accomplishments of ‘Maanavi’ are;

  • Staged more than 100 street plays on different issues

  • Creates own scripts on pressing problems as on demand. Direction and other technical detailing is also undertaken by the team

  • ‘Maanavi’ also has a full-fledged Tamate troop which is first of its kind in the state. Tamate is a percussion instrument which is generally associated with masculine identity as it is been traditionally played by men.

  • ‘Maanavi’ constantly invited by the department of Kannada and Culture to perform theater and engage in cultural activities. Department of ‘Kannada and Culture’ is an active wing of State government of Karnataka in promoting the local culture and language

  • Maanavi is also in the process of creating a youth-focused documentary group that captures the real stories of change from the grassroots to bring awareness to the general public on some of the pressing issues of marginalized communities and also to connect with the mainstream and enlighten the mainstream institutions.
